It’s not easy coordinating work, sport, and music schedules to get everyone together for a photo shoot.

This awesome mom has done it again. She’s passionate about photography herself.

I take it as a huge compliment that she’s asked me to capture her family for her.

I Heart Grandpa’s Hands

At the urging of a friend, I’ve submitted this image to I Heart Faces.

Faces are usually their focus, but this challenge highlights the hands.

I’ve never seen hands more beautiful than these.

They reflect 89 years of

hard work

service to country

respect to God and

devotion to wife & family.

His hands

scooped ice cream,

tended to plants,

pleated draperies,

held babies,

built gazebos,

sheds,

greenhouses,

and playhouses.

They also

navigated keyboards

and tapped out

memoirs

and

beautiful writings.

Not quite a teen, but not a kid. Not the oldest, but not the youngest. She’s right in the middle, but she holds her own. Look at all that charm radiating from her smile and the brightness in her eyes. BEAUTIFUL!!!!

I wouldn’t want to be a teenager again. Once was enough. But I love teens. One of my favorite summer jobs was being a youth counselor at a summer camp. I still love working with youth and I LOVE to photograph them.

I love their energy. I admire their talents, creativity, and photogenic smiles.

Family Photography has it’s charm – getting everyone together – seeing the interaction – preserving the ONE-ness of your growing clan. I get it. I am a mother of a quad. I NEED it.

I also LOVE getting a sibling, an individual, an unique character in front of my camera. As a photographer, as a mother, I need this part too. Some kids shy away from this; some grump. The toddlers give me a literal RUN for my money. We play peek-a-boo. I get silly. Others quite enjoy the lime light. Still – it’s awkward for most. It takes a few minutes before they give me a good dose of their genuine personality.

I like the game.

I like the challenge.

I like the interaction.

I love the images that show their innocence,

their playfulness,

their joy,

and their true beauty.

I love this part of a photo shoot.

I don’t know if it’s a maternal NEED or just a common tendency that mom’s “have-to-have” a photo every now and then of everyone all together – at least of all the kids.

Some of my favorite photos of my family are with us standing on the dock at Lake Powell with our wind blown hair, sunburnt noses, life jackets, and swim suit cover ups. I wish I had more family photos.

It’s stressful finding coordinating clothing that fits everyone all at the same time. It’s tough getting the kiddos fed and dressed and groomed and out the door to take photos. I know. We just had our family pictures taken.

But it’s going to be worth it. And the image you end up falling in love with may not be the one you had pictured in your head. And the one that you can’t stop looking at five years from now may not be the one that you printed huge and hung on the wall but the perfectly imperfect one that captured a personality.

Spring is Blooming

I love the spring greens and the fresh blooms that come as the weather warms.

I loved seeing this sweet girl in the middle of a field full of yellow flowers.

I love outdoor images.

It was also fun to go to the columns for a more formal feel in her pretty white dress. I love the sparkle in her eyes, the sweetness of her grin, and the pure innocence that radiates from her. Her momma hand twirled each of her curls that bounced so softly down her back perfectly.

When I was a little girl, I loved the dresses that puffed out when you twirled. My sister and I would spin until the dress fluffed out and then we’d drop down and be encircled in a full dress. Simple childhood bliss!!!!

Back in March I was on a major scavenger hunt to find a field of yellow flowers. My friend and I had dreamed up a photo of her daughter in a white dress in the midst of yellow flowers. I have learned that there are many variety of yellow blooms and they arrive at different times. The variety I had pictured started popping up everywhere in April. I was so grateful to re-visit this field and see the spring greens with little yellow blooms.

This young beauty was a thrill to capture. Her skin tone and dark features captivated my camera. She was quite the adventurer too since we had LOTS of rain leading up to the photo shoot. She had some squishy mud and wet ground cover to parade through.
